From the Dealer

Safani Gallery Inc. is a third generation family business, established in 1950, it is the oldest existing art dealership in America dedicated solely to selling ancient art.

Dr. Benjamin Mahboubian, a noted archaeologist and Persian art expert, first established the business in Iran in the 1890’s. By the 1930’s the gallery had relocated to Paris, and in the 1950’s Edward Safani, Dr. Mahboubian’s son-in-law, moved it to New York City. Mr. Safani was a pioneer and instrumental to the development of ancient and Islamic art collections in New York, France, and England. He was also a renowned ancient glass expert.

Alan Safani, Edward’s son, carries on his grandfather’s legacy. Fascinated by the ancient objects that surrounded him from a very early age, Mr. Safani developed a passion that ultimately led to graduate degrees in Ancient Near Eastern and Classical art and archaeology from New York University’s Institute of Fine Arts. In partnership with his father and later on with his wife, Katie Moffitt, Alan coordinated several exhibits, and started participating in national and international art fairs. Over the years, the business has evolved with the times by adding an internet presence, the publication of this catalogue series, and an ever expending roster of European fairs. The core focus, however, remains true to Dr. Mahboubian’s original vision. Safani Gallery Inc. continues to cater to discerning collectors and museums with extraordinary, well-provenanced works of ancient art, for art transcends time and the past does belong to us all.
